Coastal North Wales

Sailing. Sand. Sea air.
Just some of the reasons to head for our coastline.

The drive-on beach at Talacre is another. It's home to the Point of Ayr lighthouse. Built in 1776, it's the oldest one in Wales. Then there's the twin beaches at Llandudno, where you can ride the UK's only cable-hauled tramway to the top of the Great Orme. And ski down the other side. Another good reason is our sailing. Each August there's a week-long celebration in its honour. It's called the Conwy River Festival. Water-based participants include Welsh Nobbies and Gaffers. And shore-based activities include live music and a torch-lit procession.

We've other reasons. Ones you can't see. Like our sea air. It's charged with negative ions. They help regulate your mood and sleep, in case you didn't know. And waves. Just listening to them is a bit like meditation. Then there's our sunlight. It's our main source of vitamin D. Head for the award-winning beaches at Rhyl and Prestatyn. They're consistently warmer and sunnier than anywhere else in the UK. Just in case you need an excuse for a break.

We’ve other great excuses, too. Like our historic treasures. Visiting them is a good way to develop an appreciation of the finer things.

Like the fine interiors at Plas Mawr, the best surviving Elizabethan town house in Britain. Or collections from the National Portrait Gallery, the Victoria & Albert Museum, and the Royal Academy of Arts at Bodelwyddan Castle. You can catch a show at Venue Cymru. With world class performances from Welsh National Opera, Moscow State Circus and Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra. We’re a cultured sort, we Welsh.

Other things are cultured here. Like the landscaped gardens at Bodnant. They’re among the most beautiful in the UK. And the most romantic. We’ve wilder landscapes. Including some of the UK’s best watersports venues like Conwy and Prestatyn where you can sail, jet ski, dive and fish. And, not surprisingly, we’ve a bounty of seafood. Including Conwy mussels and Welsh Oak Smoked Foods They’re on all the best menus. Some say the mussels are an aphrodisiac. Told you we were romantic.

Which could explain why our great range of accommodation includes secluded boutique guest houses and romantic seafront suites in Llandudno, and cosy fisherman’s cottages in Conwy. Where you can nurture your relationship and work on your serotonin levels.
